Ep. 29- Finding Intention for Your Dance Career with Caitlin Sloan

Finding Intention for Your Dance Career with Caitlin Sloan

This week I have the pleasure of sharing an interview with Caitlin Sloan from The Brainy Ballerina. Caitlin is a dance educator, nonprofit leader and former professional dancer based in Madison, WI. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Dance from Grand Valley State University and Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management from the University of Missouri. Caitlin has been a dance educator for over a decade, most notably serving as Director of the School of Missouri Contemporary Ballet during which time founded the Missouri Contemporary Ballet Youth Ensemble. Following a 9-year career dancing with companies including Ballet Tucson and Missouri Contemporary Ballet, she founded The Brainy Ballerina. The mission of The Brainy Ballerina is to empower dancers to be curious, thoughtful, capable and prepared to meet the challenges of the dance world. Through virtual workshops, printable resources, and mentorship opportunities, The Brainy Ballerina gives dancers the tools they need to build a smart and sustainable career.

This interview really took me back to a phase in my dance career when I was trying to balance school and dreams of joining a professional ballet company. I didn’t even know where to start or who to ask for advice when I was trying to navigate this new scary world. There was a lot I didn’t know and looking back I’m sad I went through it in the dark. The good news for our dance industry is that there are now many former professional dancers out there who are willing and able to help guide the next generation. I had the pleasure of working with one of those wonderful mentors out there recently and I’m so excited to share her advice with you today. Caitlin Sloan is a  former professional dancer and founder of the Brainy Ballerina. Here’s my interview with Caitlin about mindset and finding intention in your dance career.

Here are some highlights:

  • [3m 54s] The mystery of the professional ballet world
  • [7m 40s] Lessons for the pre-professional ballet dancer

  • [14m 57s] How mindset plays a role in ballet
