Thinking about High School Dance Team Alternates? 5 different perspectives

This episode comes straight from all of you, I’ve had many people ask me to talk about having alternates on the team. It’s a tricky situation, mentally and logistically but I didn’t feel like I could talk about this topic on my own. Instead, I interviewed 5 successful high school coaches to get their insights and perspectives on using alternates in their programs. As I hoped and expected, there are some themes running through the interviews, but also some unique ideas and different approaches.

But before I share these interviews, I want to share a different perspective than any of these coaches. I personally never used alternates when I coached at the high school level. I’m not saying it’s bad by any means, I think it can be done very well. However, when you listen to these interviews my hope is that you take the ideas and inspiration and then sit with your own philosophy and approach to coaching to decide what will work best for you. You maybe decide alternates don’t work for your program and that’s ok. You may decide it does fit and you want to try a new approach. From the point of view of the psychology of coaching, there isn’t a “right” way to do this. So listen in to these interviews, and then listen to yourself and decide what’s best for you and your program.
