Ep. 75- Toxic Positivity

…and what you should say instead

Have you heard of the term toxic positivity? It’s becoming a bit of a buzzphrase, so I want to dive into this complicated topic.  I’m seeing it more and more on social media and hearing it in conversations with the dancers I work with. Sometimes is a great conversation, and other times there’s a lot of misinformation going around. I even recently asked my community on Instagram if they had experienced toxic positivity and 96% said yes. There is clearly an issue, and I think it’s time we talk about it. So in this episode, I explain what it is and what it isn’t, give you some common toxically positive phases to avoid, plus some better options of what to say instead.

Here are some highlights:

  • [1m 23s] What toxic positivity actually is, and what it isn’t
  • [4m 25s] Why we can’t ignore negative emotions
  • [9m 00 s] When you want to say, “look at the bright side,” say this instead
  • [10m 45s] The antidote to toxic positivity
  • [12m 34s] What to say instead
  • [16m 40s] How to not use toxic positivity as a teacher

Growth Mindset Workshops

For the dancers who are struggling to push through challenges or stay motivated, custom workshops are available for school teams or studios to discuss growth and fixed mindset. We go deeper than just mindset and apply it to dance by identifying their personal fix mindset triggers and discussing ways to intentionally shift into a growth mindset.

Workshops are available in-person or virtually. Click the link below for more info!
